Get Off Medication

One of my clients recently got off blood pressure and diabetes medication as a result of making lifestyle and dietary changes. To achieve his goal, we incorporated weightlifting, high intensity cardio exercises and a change in diet to improve his overall health. He’s lost weight, looks and feels great, and has dropped his biological age by 30%. Not a bad payoff for spending a little time in the gym!

Just last week another client approached me with the same goal. Can she do it? Yes, if she is willing to put in the effort. What most people don’t realize is that walking is not enough, and ho hum workout sessions will not do the trick. You must work out strenuously enough to get your heart rate up. Your heart is a muscle that like other muscles must be exercised. High intensity training (HIT) makes your heart more elastic, increases your endurance, and burns fat. The result is improved health and greater energy to do the things that make life fun.

Many people mistakenly believe that you have to run to get your heart rate up. Not so! Running isn’t for everyone, especially if you have knee problems or joint issues.  Here are some ideas for incorporating high intensity training into your life:

  1. Holding hand weights while walking uphill.

  2. Climbing stairs.

  3. Riding a stationary bike or cycling outdoors.

  4. Joining a cardio class like kick boxing or Body Combat™.

  5. Swimming.
