The treadmill, your new coat rack

Have you noticed how hard it is to work out at home? Simply buying the right equipment doesn’t seem to make a difference. If that were the case, there would be no resale market for high-end gym equipment. Remember that treadmill you bought? Are you using it to improve your fitness or is it really just an expensive coat hanger?

Think about it. When you go to the gym you go with the intention of working out. The environment puts you in the right mindset.  You get energy from the trainer and the other folks in the class. And, there is a just enough competition to make the workout fun.

Now consider working out at home. You are there by yourself. There are a lot of distractions. That expensive equipment you invested in is competing with everything else in the room – the TV, computer, pile of bills. Every time you think about exercising, a dozen other things that you “should” do come to mind. Unlike the gym, walking into that room doesn’t automatically inspire you to work out.

If you insist on working out at home, hire a trainer to visually inspect the space and help you create a room that invites you to exercise. In addition, book a few sessions with her so you get into the habit of setting aside a specific time to work out.
