Every pound of muscle burn 50 extra calories. Let me say that again, muscle burns more calories than fat, even when at rest. Active metabolic tissue can mean the difference between expending 1500 calories and 1800 calories daily; the equivalent of burning off a full meal!
There is a myth that muscles make you bulky when nothing could be further from the truth. Muscle tissue is smaller and denser than fat. Fat occupies more space. Two women may weigh the same, but their percentage of body fat may vary. If one has 30% body fat and the other 20%, the one with less body fat may be as much as two sizes smaller.
Lest you think that dieting is the key to weight loss let me assure you it is not! Typical dieters lose 50% fat and 50% muscle significantly slowing their metabolism. Once they resume their regular style of eating, they gain the weight back and then some. That is because unlike lifting weights dieting lowers rather than raises their resting metabolic rate (RMR), often permanently.
